Government on Discussions to Raise penalty for animal cruelty

FisheriesAnimal Husbandry and Dairy Minister Sanjeev Kumar Balyan told Parliament on Tuesday that the government was considering several representations received on raising the fine for animal cruelty from the current Rs 50 for such an offense. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Balyan said the Department of Animal Husbandry, and Dairy was receiving a wide range of representations from various animal welfare organizations, animal lovers and individuals to increase the penalty which mentioned in Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act 1960. “The department is considering that representation about the possibility of increasing the existing penalty,” he said. The PCA currently imposes a fine of up to Rs 50 for cruelty to animals such as starvation, torture, beating and mutilating an animal.
